Gum disease prevention

The best way to treat gum disease is not just by treating it – it’s to prevent it before it happens. And to prevent gum disease, we should look into the causes and find a way to avoid these things that cause it. So here’s a general guide on how you can prevent gum disease.

The three rule in dental care – it’s a simple rule that says you should brush your teeth for at least three minutes, three times a day with no exceptions and no excuses. It’s the most basic yet the most important way to prevent gum diseases as it keeps our mouth fresh and free of bacteria.

Killing smoking before it kills you and your gums – despite all the claims of how hard it is to kill the habit, many have accomplished it. If knowing this helps, smoking is a leading cause of diseases, including gum disease. It also causes discoloration of the teeth and gums, as well as bad breath so getting rid of the habit gives you a better immune system, fresher breath, better looking teeth and longer life.

Stop eating sweets by eating sweets – sugar is a major culprit for most dental related diseases.  For that reason, if you’re sweet toothed, I’ve got bad news for you as your indulgence and interest in preventing gum diseases are going to have a big conflict with each other. Fortunately, delicious alternative called natural sugars are found in fruits. Not only are they healthy snacks, but they are less fatty so you can eat as much as you like, guilt-free! Fruits are also a natural source of vitamin C which is one of the best natural gum disease remedies.

Vitamins – now that we’re on the topic, getting a steady source of vitamins isn’t a bad idea either. Vitamin C reinforces the gums and is required for prevention of gum diseases. In the old times, sailors used to eat lemons before taking long trips to prevent gum diseases. Vitamin D offers similar benefits, calcium ensures the teeth are healthy and iron helps against bleeding gums.

Making an appointment – the dentists are only scary if you have dental problems so regular check-ups shouldn’t matter as long as you’ve been taking proper care of your teeth. Regardless, it is still important that you visit your dentist once every six months as they can provide those extra tips for a good dental health specifically for your teeth and gums. Once you’ve gone through all these efforts, it shouldn’t take too long to notice the overall improvement on your dental health.
